We are all familiar with memorial plaques, a simple
reminder
of someone special, with a brief inscription.
Now there is a place for…..the rest of the story.
Since the Lake Havasu City Historical Society was founded in 1975, it has worked
to gather and preserve historically rich narratives, which help tell the story
of Lake Havasu’s unique history. In 2001 the Historical Society opened the Lake
Havasu Museum of History to better share with the community local historical
exhibits and artifacts.
Now the Lake Havasu
Museum of History is taking its mission to a broader audience, via the Our Story
Project. Summer 2008 was the official launch date of the museum’s ambitious
project, and we encourage all to participate and contribute. By doing so,
you will not only be supporting the museum, you will be contributing to the
perpetual data base we hope to create throughout the coming years.
What is the Our Story Project?
We see it as a collection of stories or articles, similar to oral histories.
What can the stories be about?
They are biographies of Lake Havasu pioneers, notables and historical accounts
of local businesses and organizations.
How long is each story?
Each story should be between 1000 to 1500 words. Each story will be on its
own web page, included in the Our-Story.org website.
Can the stories include photographs?
Yes! We encourage photographs.
Who can submit a story for consideration?
Anyone.
Will all stories be accepted?
No. Each must meet the editorial standards and guidelines set by the Lake
Havasu Museum of History. All biographies must be about someone who either
lived in the Lake Havasu area, or who has strong ties to the community. If it is about a
Lake Havasu business, it must be an historical account of the business, not an
advertisement. In essence, the story must be as interesting in twenty years, as
it is today.
Will there be advertisements placed on Our-Story.org?
Yes and no. On some pages we are not allowing any advertising on the website. No banner ads,
no link ads. But, each sponsor will be allowed to place their contact
information on each page they sponsor, along with a link back to their business
website, if desired.
How long will the sponsor information remain on the sponsored web
page?
For the life of the website. We have every intention of
Our-Story.org being a perpetual project, to remain online for the enjoyment of
future generations. Of course, we will remove any contact information at
the sponsor’s request. We will also remove any links that become obsolete.
Why would someone want to submit a story?
It is a way to honor and memorialize a Havasuvian, presenting a story for
future generations to share. It is also a way for a business to tell its
story, how it happened to come to Lake Havasu, and what its role in the
community has been.
How much does it cost?
$200. This cost covers a perpetual web page with sponsor information and links.
½ of this amount goes directly to the museum to support other projects.
Do you write the story for us?
No. Each contributor is responsible for supplying a story. But, if you
need a writer or editor we can supply you with a list of local writers and
editors. Any writer's fees are paid by the sponsor, directly to the
writer. Authors of each story are given a byline, and if desired, a link back to
their author's web page.
What should we include, when writing our story?
Think of the basic: who, what, where, when, why and how. When telling your
story, answer those six questions!
Will you edit or correct our spelling?
Yes. we reserve the right to make minor editing and spelling corrections.
Who will own the rights to the story, after it goes
on the Our-Story.org website?
Sponsors and or the authors agree that the Lake Havasu Museum
of History, will have the right to use the articles in future projects of the
Museum, as well as permitting the articles to remain online for the life of
our-story.org.
